ACUPUNCTURE
Traditional acupuncture is a healthcare system based on ancient principles which are over two thousand years.
It has a very positive model of good health and function, and looks at pain and illness as signs that the body is out of balance. The overall aim of acupuncture treatment, then, is to restore the body's equilibrium. What makes this system so uniquely suited to modern life is that physical, emotional and mental are seen as interdependent, and reflect what many people perceive as the connection between the different aspects their lives. The focus is on the individual, not their illness, and all the symptoms are seen in relation to each other. Each patient is unique; two people with the same western diagnosis may well receive different acupuncture treatments. Traditional acupuncturists believe that the underlying principle of treatment is that illness and pain occur when the body's qi, or vital energy, cannot flow freely. There can be many reasons for this; emotional and physical stress, poor nutrition, infection or injuries are among the most common. By inserting ultra-fine sterile needles into specific acupuncture points, a traditional acupuncturist seeks to re-establish the free flow of qi to restore balance and trigger the body's natural healing response. There are many conditions that can benefit from acupuncture these include:
CUPPING THERAPY A complimentary treatment and sometimes used an alternative to acupuncture, cupping therapy aims to increase blood flow to a specific area to aid healing. Cupping therapy is an ancient form of alternative medicine in which a local suction is created on the skin. Cups of usually either glass or plastic are placed on the skin and suction is created using heat (fire) or mechanical devices (hand or electrical pumps). The cups remain on the skin between 5-15 minutes. What types of conditions can it treat?
Will I experience any side effects from cupping therapy? Cupping is considered very safe for most people; however it is possible to experience some mild discomfort and superficial bruising. |
Dr Mark Porter MBE GP and medical correspondent Not only have Carl and the team at Personal Best helped us keep in shape, they have also made the whole process fun. And until I found PB I never associated gyms with fun. Indeed I hated them, which is why I never managed to stick with any fitness regime for more than a few months. The fact that we are still training at PB ten years after we first met Carl says it all really. |
