Golf Specific Training

At Personal Best, we believe your swing should feel natural and you should be fully at ease when you are playing. Being fitter will certainly improve your game, but many golfers have a physical restriction that prevents them from getting into the right positions, holding those positions through the swing and connecting correctly with the ball. Our trainers will work with you to identify your physical restrictions and correct them by working on your postural strength, stability, mobility and power. By working through these golf specific exercises, you will gain the physical ability to perform your best swing consistently and powerfully.

You will also be shown relevant and effective pre and post golf exercises to help you get the most from your game and reducing the risk of injury. An integral feature of these sessions is the golf specific screen test that each participant goes through. All the screen tests have been designed by the Titleist Performance Institute and once completed each client will have a bespoke program of exercises that are designed to unlock the body’s full potential on the golf course.

As well as individual golf specific training, we also run a golf specific exercise class. The class caters for golfers of all abilities and follows the format of a circuit class, offering exercises that are relevant and effective for all golfers.

An integral feature of the class is the golf specific screen test that each participant goes through. All the screen tests have been designed by the Titleist Performance Institute and once completed each client will have a bespoke program of exercises that are designed to unlock the body’s full potential on the golf course.

Why should I take part?

The class focuses on 4 key areas, flexibility, stability, balance and strength. By taking part in the class, the performer should expect to make significant improvement in the following:

  • drive the ball further
  • increase in stamina for 18+ holes of golf
  • improved concentration
  • reduced risk of injury

Golf Screen with Simon Sveder Cain

Golf Screen is one of the most valuable tools in the toolbox for any golf, fitness, or medical professional who works with golfers. Not only can the Screen help identify physical limitations that shape a player’s swing and contribute to painful movement, it facilitates communication between professionals in various fields of performance enhancement (instruction, fitness, and medical). This team approach is at the core of the TPI game improvement philosophy. One issue that often comes up is what to do with the screening results, particularly when someone “fails” multiple tests (for purposes of this discussion, I’ll refer to the complete package as the “Screen” but each individual screen as a “test”).

There are several individual tests within the Level 1 Screen which will provide the trainer with the information they need to create a specific golf fitness program.

The TPI Screen consists of the following

  • Pelvic tilt
  • Torso rotation
  • Lower body rotation
  • Overhead deep squat
  • Toe touch90-90 shoulder and 90-90 shoulder in golf stance
  • Single leg stance
  • Upper quarter (without and with scapular stabilization)
  • Lower quarter
  • Glute Bridge
  • Reach roll and lift
  • Leg lowering
  • Ankle inversion/eversion
  • Wrist Partial squat/ankle eversion
  • Cervical spine

TPI professionals have several options on how to prioritize their corrective interventions. Certainly, you can combine different strategies simultaneously.

If the player is in pain, the first priority is to get them out of pain.

Address what is most relevant to the player’s swing. A major concept upon which TPI is built is the body-swing connection. How the player swings the club is an expression of his or her underlying movement ability. Correct the pattern that subjectively appears the worst. This strategy makes intuitive sense, but you need a firm grasp on how to define “worst” if there are multiple failures.

As far as I know, there hasn’t been any research to grade the screen beyond the pass/fail benchmarks. The fewer failures, the more realistic this strategy becomes.Correct all the failures you see. Big problem here is that your programs become too scattered if you try to correct everything at once.
